課程概述

This semester, we study life table analysis which is a method commonly used in entomological studies (and non-entomological studies). Students will be asked to collect data outside the class. Thus, students should have some access to a lab to maintain their organisms. Study organisms should grow rapid enough to complete the data collection within a semester (ideally within two months). If students have no access to a lab but still want to enroll, they should contact the instructor.

Data collection requires daily observations (including weekends). Although daily data collection may not take much time, it takes some determination and commitment to complete a study successfully. We don't know whether to form groups yet. Students must be responsible in conducting their experiments.

This is a two-credit course, but three hours are allocated for each week. Because of this and the required daily experiment commitment, the course (at least the lecture part) will end early (approx. 10 weeks). We will spend time flexibly to complete materials. Students must write formal manuscripts based on their own data and analysis.

課程目標
Students will be able to (1) interpret published studies correctly, (2) understand the limitations of the method, and (3) conduct a complete life table study on their own.
